A Star’s Lover OST & BGM

Episode 1
 cap001

Two Chopin’s Nocturnes constantly recur in the drama, one in major key, another in minor. It appears that the different tonalities go with the moods portrayed in different scenes. Nocturne for piano No. 2 in Eb major Op. 9 first appears in Ma Ri’s recall of her parents. This is the piece her father played on the electric organ in the classroom scene. This is also the same number which Eun Young requests Chul Soo to play for her.

The other nocturne, Nocturne for piano No. 1 in F minor Op. 55, highlights the sad moments. It is also employed in scenes in a more melancholic and contemplative tone.

Ma Ri reminiscing her first love who disappeared

The background music is really nice. Wondering who the composer is. I like especially the orchestral arrangement, up to par with film music, which does a perfect job in creating different moods.

Theme 1     A fragmented melody line played by the strings, with lots of pauses, then taken up by a lonely cello, answered by the violins on offbeats. Doesn’t the music say a lot about the tension between Chul Soo and Eun Young already?

Theme 2    With the lower strings providing a warm harmony, the violins carry a powerful, lyrical melody. Romantic…

Theme 3     Another lovely tune played by the strings in a waltz-like manner. The addition of the harmonica goes very well with the country scene.

Theme 4     This excerpt sounds more new age, with high-pitched electronic sounds giving it a surreal ambiance. The muted, electronically enhanced drum beat provides momentum, while the harmony provided by the piano keeps progressing. With just the music, I could imagine Chul Soo’s approaching Ma Ri with the blanket with my eyes closed.

LYRICS

It’s a magic, Love could never die

You, Don’t forget to love
My heart will never go

It’s a magic, Love could never die

You, Don’t forget to love
My heart will never go

It’s a magic, Love could never die

You, Don’t forget to love
My heart will never go

Episode 2

Again, Chopin’s Nocturne for piano No. 1 in F minor Op. 55 is used. Here, the highly ornamented main theme  is used to transition from Chul Soo’ s observing Ma Ri to bringing the audience directly into Ma Ri’s dream. The cadenza-like quality of the music matches perfectly with the vertigo effect created visually by the camera.

Theme 5
Lovely arrangement of Moon Riverwith solo violin and piano accompaniment. Common instrumental combination for ballet warm up exercise.

Theme 2 again. Ma Ri sees Chul Soo reading a novel.

and here as well… Ma Ri kisses Chul Soo to prove that she can fake happiness and all other emotions which make up for things she doesn’t have in life.

Just loves how this excerpt begins and ends with a simple melodic line carried by the piano, with the climax built upon by a full string section.

Theme 6     Duet between cello and violin (? Not sure…), supported by an interesting combination of harmony instruments – piano, harp and marimba.

Theme 7     Piano solo. Simple, serene, bittersweet…

Episode 3

Theme 8     A warm and mellow tune carried by the cello, constructed upon a three-note ascending motive, accompanied by the piano. The flowing melody unfolds slowly, seems to be taking time to review loving memories one by one…
and here too…

Theme 2 again. Ma Ri reading Chul Soo’s script elaborating her comment made at the palace’s remains.

Theme 9      A heavy-hearted descending figure starts off this somber and ominous excerpt. Prominent sound of the lower spectrum of the violins is featured, contained by the steady triple meter. The melody builds up to its climax with increasing dissonance (chromatic notes) and crescendo.

 Episode 4

Theme 2 seems to appear most frequently to highlight Ma Ri’s affection for Chul Soo thus far. In this episode, Theme 2 is used to highlight Chul Soo’s affection for Mar Ri instead. Perhaps I shall just call it the Love Theme ^-^

Nocturne for piano No. 1 in F minor Op. 55 again. Chul Soo’s reflection is too nice not to post ^^”

Theme 2 again

and again.

Nocturne for piano No. 2 in Eb major Op. 9 again. Isn’t it clever for Chul Soo to make his presence known to Ma Ri by playing the piece in this scene? What he doesn’t know is the music also brings back the loving memories of Ma Ri’s parents, and perhaps, this gives her the strength to exit from this difficult situation.

P.S. The underwater scene is beautiful and I like the music that goes with it a lot. The muted and echo effect does the magic. What’s more, the sustained note held by the strings together with the high notes of the piano melody give a floating and ethereal quality to the scene.

Theme 6 again. I’m sure it’s violin and cello in this excerpt.

Episode 5

Theme 10     Ma Ri makes her grand appearance at the university Chul Soo works at. Fulls string section plus rolls on the timpani, cymbals and glissandi on the harp. Hmm.

Theme 2 again. Chul Soo saves Ma Ri again during a live Q&A session in which she is asked to explain a character she mentioned in her book.

Episode 6

Theme 11     Ma Ri sneaks into Chul Soo’s house. Played in the background is a playful tune on the piano featuring quick bass runs and syncopated melodic line, intercepted by little melodies by the clarinet and supported plucked strings and vibraphone.

Theme 12     This scene starts off with a leisurely piano melody accompanied by the guitar and double bass. The conga and bongo drums provide the bossa nova rhythms. It then swiftly shifts to 씨엘 Ciel – “하고 싶은 말 Ha go shipeun mal” when Chul Soo goes to check if Ma Ri is still outside his home.

LYRICS

Theme 2 again. Chul Soo covers Ma Ri with a blanket after seeing her fallen asleep while reading.

Theme 13     Executive Seo threatens Chul Soo, reminding him he can lose his future as a writer and lecturer if he is found out being a ghostwriter. The somber tone is accentuated by the minor tonality and heavy use of dissonance (relentless repretition of minor 2nds) in the piano melody.

Intimate moments…
Chul Soo rolls over and traps Ma Ri as she tries to make him more comfortable while he sleeps. Wondering why this song isn’t included in the OST…

Theme 14     Chul Soo wakes up to find Ma Ri sleeping with her head on his arm. Another heartwarming little piano tune in triple meter.
